Parts Types and Categories

The three main types of parts are: OEM (new); AM (New) and Salvage. OEM parts are sold or licensed by automakers for the vehicles they manufacture (or distribute). AM parts are new generic parts sold by parts manufacturers as alternatives (usually at a lower price) to OEM parts. Salvage parts are recycled from vehicles that are no longer in operation.

Each automaker has its own method of categorizing its OEM parts by product lines and organizational responsibility. Below six categories of OEM parts (applicable to all automakers) are explored – each is largely distinguished from the others by buyers types, buyer behaviors and how the parts reach the dealership. The six OEM part categories are: mechanical parts, collision parts (a.k.a., body parts), vintage parts, recovered parts, accessories and tires. Descriptions of each of the six new OEM parts categories are provided on the Parts Categories – Definitions page.
