Parts Locators: Automaker Programs and All-Makes Solutions

This chart covers parts locators used by franchised dealerships (and potentially others) to find dealers (or possibly others) with the searched-for parts in stock.  The chart excludes locators designed to primarily provide used (LKQ) or aftermarket (AM) parts.

Locators by their nature are 'network effect' products that are most useful/valuable the higher the participation/use rate.  However, there are all-makes parts locators - all of which are "Open" (described after chart) - that have endure the test of time.  Three all-makes automotive OE parts locators are included in the final row of this chart (immediately following Volkswagen).

Discounting of parts (generally idle parts), if displayed within the locator, is flagged within the Attributes column.  A separate chart summarizing Idle Parts solutions for automotive OE parts is posted in Charts and Diagrams.

Background

Parts locators are used by dealers to find a part that is needed immediately (and is not in stock at the dealer's own parts inventory).  As a 'network' solution, it is typical to find a single parts locator serving a franchise community.

Locators can be "closed" or "open".  A closed locator is available only to dealerships (and a few others) that make up the parts sales channel (from the automaker's perspective).  As a consequence, only dealers can post parts inventory and only dealers can search (and buy) parts inventory.  The locators with 'Open' in the Attributes column allow any potential buyer to acess and search the locator as a buyer; they typically restrict non-dealers from posting parts inventory.
